Review: White Stag (Permafrost #1) by Kara Barbieri

39863517 Summary from Goodreads:

The first book in a brutally stunning series where a young girl finds herself becoming more monster than human and must uncover dangerous truths about who she is and the place that has become her home.

As the last child in a family of daughters, seventeen-year-old Janneke was raised to be the male heir. While her sisters were becoming wives and mothers, she was taught to hunt, track, and fight. On the day her village was burned to the ground, Janneke—as the only survivor—was taken captive by the malicious Lydian and eventually sent to work for his nephew Soren.

Janneke’s survival in the court of merciless monsters has come at the cost of her connection to the human world. And when the Goblin King’s death ignites an ancient hunt for the next king, Soren senses an opportunity for her to finally fully accept the ways of the brutal Permafrost. But every action he takes to bring her deeper into his world only shows him that a little humanity isn’t bad—especially when it comes to those you care about.

Through every battle they survive, Janneke’s loyalty to Soren deepens. After dangerous truths are revealed, Janneke must choose between holding on or letting go of her last connections to a world she no longer belongs to. She must make the right choice to save the only thing keeping both worlds from crumbling.

Review:

I mainly picked up this Fantasy because of the stunning cover. And it turned out to be a good read.

What I Liked:

Plot/Setting. My favorite aspect of the novel was the world building and the mythology that Barbieri used. It was an aspect of mythology that I've never read about so that increased my enjoyment while reading.

Characters. The novel solely follows our main character, Janneke, a human in the Goblin world. Barbieri also did a great job crafting the side characters. A well-done villain that you hated and an okay love interest, Soren. However, the best character was Janneke, she was the main reason I kept reading until the end.

Writing. This was my first novel by Barbieri and I was a fan of her writing. I even went ahead and read the unedited version of book two, Goblin King on Wattpad (that I liked even more than book two) and will be checking out the third novel when it comes out.

Action. White Stag was action packed and so was the sequel. Some parts dragged but overall I was never bored while reading because there was always intense scenes around the corner.

What I Disliked:

Pacing/Length. The one issue that took away some of my enjoyment was the pacing. The places between the action scenes that dragged a bit. Also, I felt that the novel could have been shorter.

Romance. I was not a huge fan of the main romance in book one. I just did not connect with it. However, I did enjoy it in the second one, it felt less rushed there.

I recommend checking out this YA Fantasy for the interesting plot and characters.

Rating:

4 Stars Out of 5 Stars.
