Review: Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns #1) by Kendare Blake

 Summary from Goodreads:

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

My Review:

I've been craving some fantasy lately and Blake's new series Three Dark Crowns was a great and entertaining beginning to an epic fantasy series.

What I Loved:

The characters! I was hoping to pick one of the queens to support but I had a hard time disliking any of them. A big part of me is hoping no one dies at all.

The world building was amazing. The novel spent a lot of time character building because it follows three main characters but it did scrimp on creating the magical elements and background.

The weaving story line and the plot. The lives of the three sisters and their very different areas/worlds start off unconnected and it was interesting to read as they begin to intertwine. The plot it self was so unique and nothing felt formulaic at all.

The twists. Overall the novel was thrilling, it constantly surprised me and the cliffhangers!!!!! I hope the next one comes out soon so I can find out what happens next.

The writing. I'm now a big fan of Blake's writing style and I will finally be checking out her other series! (it helps that just got the Anna Dressed in Blood series)

What I Did Not Care For:

The love triangle. It is not the worse one I've come across but it is still a love triangle and I'm not a fan of those. However, it will be interesting to see what happens with it as the series progresses. And it had a little too much romance for me, I tend to like my fantasies without it but I was rooting for some couples.

I recommend checking this out if like Fantasy and do not mind love triangles.

My Rating:

4.5 Stars Out of 5
